It had a perfectly round door like a porthole, painted green, with a shiny yellow brass knob in the exact middle. The door opened on to a tube-shaped hall like a tunnel: a very comfortable tunnel without smoke, wtih pannel walls, the floors tiled and carpeted, provived with polished chairs, and lots and lots of pegs for hats and coats....continued on page 11.

Questions:
Classic – Title: The Hobbit

-Author: J.R.R. Tolkien
Modern – Title:
Vulture's Gate

-Author:
Kristy Murry
1. Describe the time and place in which your novel is set. What clues within the book tell us this?
It it set out in alot of different places, there are huge kingdoms, tons of forests, moutians of enormous sizes and there were dragons. Id say it was a long time ago where people used to use swords to fight and there wasnt much eletronics around. Id probably say they were around the "Middle Ages" maybe around the 5th century to the 15th century, though this is a fantasy, who knows when this was based when the author was writing this.
This book is set in the future and how do i know that? well on the book case it says the future, though this book has some pretty instesting things that hints in in the future even if it didnt tell you. Like on big thing was that Girls had gone extinct and the techonology they used seem to be slitghy better though it seemed to be pretty corrupted so they didnt have money to afford that sort of techonology. They use guns and they had this prelly big bike called the daisy- may, its like a really big harly davison with lasers, a gps and a big bubble shield.
2. Who are the main characters in your book? List the names and a short description of their personality traits.
There were i would say alot characters in this book, but i think there are only 3 main characters.

Bilbo Baggins- He was the only hobbit out of the 14 adventures, he gets scared sometimes but always overcomes his fears. Throughout his adventures he slowly gains more and more respect from his friends for his skills on the "field" he ends up being the "hero" of the adventure.

Gandalf- he was also the only wizard he seemed to be very old and respected by everyone. He seems very Exprienced with what he does he also is very intellagent, helping the adventures through troubles through there 1st half of there adventure.

Thorin Oakenshield- He was the
leaders of the group of dwarves he was very bold i think abit arrogent in some ways he thought of the hobbit, but quicky changed. He also had alot of respect in the end for the hobbit, he was also very highly respected by the other dwarves, I think he wore a hood and a large gold belt with his shirt tucked in it during the adventure.
This book i based on two main characters, and their adventure together.

Callum- Callum is a intresting character, he is very straight minded but at the same time very detertime too. I like him very much because sometimes he acts like a complete idiot and when he gets correct by Bo its funny, though, I also really likes his determination he always tries to get things done so he can finally be reunited with his fathers. I dont really know how I relate to her.

Bo- Shes a cool character, shes really smart and can do some really awesome fighting stuff. I like how she always corrects Callum and he gets all angry. She users technology to help solve their mission, shes also really helpful, saving callum and helping him find his fathers. I dont really know how i can relate to her.
3. Describe the significant relationships between the main characters.
There a quite alot of relationships in this book, but i chose 3 main significant relationships in this boook.
Mr. Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield- When Thorin first met Biblo he didnt like him very much he thought the hobbits were "burglars", but throughout their adventure Thorin and the dwarves gained more and more respect for Mr.Baggins for his well thought out plans and quick wits.
Mr. Baggings and Gandalf- For me personally i think this is my favourite relasionship in the book, At first when Mr. Baggings first met Gandalf he could not remember who he was, after soeme thinking he then remembered who he was. He gained alot of respect for gandalf after this. He would usally rely on gandalf through the mission, but gandalf always belevied in him always thinking he'd get respect from the dwarves , and in the end he did gain the respect he also didnt have to depened on gandalf anymore when he left, Mr. baggins became very independent.
Thorin Oakenshield and Gandalf- As a leader Thorin would often seek help from Gandalf with plans, but when Gandalf had to leave he had to learn to lead himself. I think they both had alot of respect for one another.
There really isnt alot of relasionship between the characters probably because the whole story revoles around two main characters.
Callum and Bo- The whole story revoles around the 2 of them. When Bo first saved Callum from the outstrainsoiners, she found him quite intersting abit like a new creature she'd never met before. And when Callum first met Bo he though she was quite weird, like she didnt like sugar and and any normal things a normal 12-13 year old would like. Thoughout the book they both gain a stronger relationship with each other having a really strong friendship they would risk their lifes to help the other, they were like brothers at first but then whem callum found out that Bo was a girl, he'd become more proctective and more aware abit like an older brother. They seem to know what each other are thinking and know wat to do at the right time when in danger. I think they have a really stronge bond.
4. Who is your favourite character and why? Or - Who is the character that you can most closely relate to and why?
My favourite character was Bilbo Baggins. I thought he played a very important role in this book. I like him for alot of reasons but 2 stood out the most and i wish i could learn from him.
He was very brave, throughout his adventures with the dwarves, i thought he was abit cowardly at first but then even his braveness amazed me through the adventure. I like this a lot cause it makes the book a lot more exciting with the things he did eg. like when he met Smuag, its cool to watch him talk himself through big moments and overcome his fear.
He was also very Smart, Mr. Baggins had a really awesome talent, he could think of amazing plans during situations where you'd feel completely doomed eg. when they were trapped in the elf castle. It created alot of suspence in the book while he would think of plans very quickly and switly to save the dwarves, and while reading the book thinking to yourself if his plans were succesfull or if they would fail.
these are 2 really big reasons why i like Bilbo Baggins.
My favourite character in this book would probably be Callum because i find him very intersting and kinda funny in a way.
Callum is very straight minded and very obnoxsious in his thinking, he normally always just thinks his right and does not want to listen to any others ideas. Even thought he thinks this way, its also good in a way it really shows how determination can change a person. and his determination really did help out alot on their adventure, he really wanted to find his two dads while Bo always wanted to help him she sometimes had second doubts on the mission though Callum would always believe he could achieve it and would not go back unless he found his two fathers.
In a way i think callum is kinda smart he sometimes can come of with amazing ideas to help the two get out of trouble. Even though he can think of plans like in an instand Bo normally has a better plan cause of her experience and that somethimes makes callum kinda angry. I dont know how i could relate to Callum, but id really like to see what he can do later on in the book.
5. Describe the style of language and literary devices that the author uses.

a) Find examples of; colourful adjectives, similes, metaphor, dramatic irony, etc..

b) Find a quote (with page number) for each example.
I think the language use in this book was magnificent they were so livley and made you want to keep reading and reading, though, they were soo many style and language's used in this book, i couldnt number them all down.

"Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit hole, and that means comfort" (pg.3)

'"Voiceless It cries, Wingless flutters, Toothless bites, Mouthless mutters." (pg.88)

"It cannot be seen, cannot be felt, Cannot be hear, connot be smelt. It lies behind stars and underhills, And empty holes holes it fills. It comes first and fallows after, Ends life, kills laughter. (pg.89)

"Sss, sss, my preciouss," (pg.89)

"Smaug lay, with wings folded like an immeasurbale bat, turned parlty on one side, so that the hobbit could see his underparts and his long pale belly crusted with gems and fragments of gold from his long lying on his costly bed. Behind him were the helms and axes, swords and spears hanging; and there in rows stood great jars and vessels filled with a wealth no one could not be guessed." (pg. 250)
The style and language use in this book were more modern than the hobbit. i dont think it was as descriptive and as exciting though i still liked it, there wasnt as much differnt literature and vocabulary in this book.
6. Is your book an example of ‘classic’ or ‘modern’ literature? You must use evidence to back up your stance. For example; has your book stood the ‘test of time’? Are there theme’s that will transcend time?
I think thie book uses more of a morden litlerature but it sets back a long time ago, one big give away that this was based a long time ago was that the weapons and clothes they use arnt used nowadays, eg, they use swords, axes, spears and shields they also use magic and im not sure when we'll use that. The clothes they wear arnt very "hip" they dont wear jeans, t shirts or anything a normal person would wear nowadays.
J.R.R Tolkien doesnt really use very old english, with words like "thy". he uses words we use today but just places them in a different way we would today, eg. "Half a momment!" we dont see that much in most books these days it normally just comes out as "wait a sec".
My last point is that The Hobbit i read was a "modern litature" version so it doesnt have most of the old stye and language uses, im not sure about the normal classic one though.
This book uses modern litlerature i could see no evidence of classic literature. I know that because after reading my book The Hobbit that uses some modern litlerature with words like "thy". I think it is also modern literature because the way they speak and talk are the way we would talk today.
my final point is that this book is what it would be like in the future. so of course the language they would use would be "mordern" not classic cause thats old, what im trying to say is that why would you have something old in a new book?
7. After reading the book, write a short note to a friend describing the book. Include a description of the genre, setting and difficulty level. You need to also include the following information; What were the main themes in the book? What was the central conflict? How was it resolved?

Describe your feelings towards the novel.

Did you enjoy it, why or why not?

Did you find it easy to get into? Did you like it the more that you read it?

Would you read more books by the same author, or of a similar genre?
I think this book was just amazing, everyone should give this book a try. The genre of the book was more adventure and magic, it sets in a time way back but in a way kinda makes you think its also abit more modern than a book like dracula. The difficulty of this book might be challenging to some younger readers id suggust someone at the age of 12 and above. The big big conflict was that smuag was guarding the treasure and they desperatly needed to find a way to deafeat him. It was resolved by the humans ending smuags "roll".

I deffiantly to think this is one of the best books ive read and id suggest it to anyone whos looking for a great book with different literanture and just plain excitment.
i enjoyed this book alot, why? because it had alot of describtion but it wouldnt drag on and on it would keep you very much entertained.
i found that the first one or two chapters werent as exciting because they were more explaining wat they were doing.
i would deffinatly want to read more books from the same genre, and by the amazing J.R.R tolkien, im pretty sure after im done with this assement im going to go on reading the Lord of The Rings series, i hope it is as good at the hobbit though!
i think this book was a good book it an overall stantard its not really my favourite of my favourite genre but nevertheless it was fun to try new stuff. Its set in the future where a boy named Callum is trying to find his two fathers and he meets this girl called Bo who helps him, they both set out on really cool adventures to try find them. its set in our world in like 2045 where its all corrupt and run by terroism and theres no women or girls left.
Id suggest to someone around 9-11 its not that hard it uses simple words. The main conflict was that callum was lost from his two fathers and he had to try find them. They escape the island and leave to safty
My feelings towards the book arnt all that great, yes it was fun to read but it probably wouldnt be on of those books id remember for a long time. I kinda enjoyed it, some parts for me were just abit weird for me haha, but it was exciting sometimes draging on abit though. To me almost every book ive read drags on abit at the start and it was the same with this one, but then throughout the book it got better and better.
i dont think im going to read more Kirsty Murray books there just not my kind of book, i might give it a try if i change my mind though.
